Meta: A Satirical Look in Black Pop-Culture
Dominic Clay: Artist, Assistant Curator
Houston Museum of African American Culture
«Meta» references my experiences as a Black millennial in America narrated by my identity in a visual dialogue with the viewer. My work is crafted from both traditional and modern dialogues. I find inspiration in the parallels of the past, present, and future. I use portraiture to serve as an investigation into my identity as well as the viewer's, the cynicism of postmodernism, pop-culture, and the optimism of metamodernism.
I desire sincerity in the creation and expression of my art. I do not desire to forfeit all that us as humans and creators alike have learned from postmodernism but rather meld it with a sort of romanticism and grand narratives that make our universal truths a bit more palatable.
