Queensbury Theatre and Dance Houston present a co-production of a preview of Swing, Baby, Swing!, a new musical theatre production by Norma Miller and Dance Houston about love, joy, and bringing people together inspired by the life and times of the original Lindy hoppers who danced at The Savoy Ballroom.
Norma Miller (A Day at the Races, Keep Punchin, Hellzapoppin', Malcolm X) was a principal dancer in Whitey’s Lindy hoppers, the world’s most celebrated Lindy hop dance company that soared with Chick Webb, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, and Ethel Waters during the height of the swing era. She is a National Heritage Fellowship of the NEA for creating and continuing to preserve ''the acrobatic style swing dance, known as the Lindy Hop.'' She inspires people through world tours, films, a memoir, and an illustrated young reader's book. Swing, Baby, Swing! shares her message through the very thing that makes it special—dance!
The musical features original songs by Miller including Swing, Baby, Swing and a tribute to the late, great Frankie Manning, Swingin’ Frankie's Way. It also features Miller’s favorite songs from the Tony-nominated musical Bubbling Brown Sugar by Lofton Mitchell with big band favorites It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing and Stompin' at the Savoy. The ensemble tops the breakdancing and air steps memorialized in the 1930’s Hollywood films by The Marx Brothers (A Day at the Races, Olsen and Johnson’s Hellzapoppin’).
Dance Houston is co-producing Swing, Baby, Swing! to debut at Miller Outdoor Theatre on October 12 & 13, with A.E.A. Broadway performing veteran Dwight Baxter (Bob Fosse and Hal Prince’s Grind, Woman of the Year with Lauren Bacall, Three Musketeers, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Treemonisha). The musical is directed and choreographed by Carla Earle (The Wiz, 42nd Street, Chicago, Ragtime and Bubbling Brown Sugar).
The production began in 2016 in Houston with preview performances at The Wortham Center and Texas Southern University. Additional previews have been given in 2017 at Emancipation Park and Miller Outdoor Theatre. A production workshop is underway developing costumes and sets including scenic drops, a stage turntable, zoot suits, tuxedos, ladies ''after five'' dresses, fedoras and pillbox hats.
